Why specialize in the St. Paul side of town?
I am a St. Paul guy. I grew up a block outside the city limits in West St. Paul. I’ve lived in Highland, Mac-Groveland, Hamline Midway and now in another St. Paul neighboring town, South St. Paul. I’ve worked in Desnoyer Park, West St. Paul, Mendota Heights, on Randolph and on Summit Avenue in the capital city. I grew up playing hockey in the old District 8 against Rosemount, Inver Grove Heights, Farmington, and bitter rivals Cottage Grove and South St. Paul. I spent summers fishing near Balsam Lake, WI and dropping a line in the St. Croix river from Prescott and Hastings up to Hudson and Stillwater.
My grandparents went to Mechanic Arts. My dad went to Monroe, and my mom went to Humboldt. My oldest went to Como Park, and my youngest went to the same building where my mom did.
I can’t decide who makes the best pizza between Angelo’s, Carbone’s, Cossetta’s, and Mama’s and don’t want to because I love them all. I’ve probable eaten a metric ton of Boca Chica, el Burrito Mercado, Black Sea, Hoa Bien, Saigon, Brunson’s, Shamrock’s and Skinner’s, and all we’ve lost like O’Gara’s, Risimini’s, and Hot City (and the $6 lunch specials at Degidio’s). I’ve walked across the high bridge—both the 1889 and the 1987 versions. I’ve met Fighting Saints, Vulcans, and Boreas Rexes. I spent the 2010’s running a hockey program at North Dale Rec Center to offer hockey three days a week to kids as close to free as possible. This is my town, the people around here are my people, and I’m here for you.
