There’s something about CDs

July 21, 2026 Terrence Bogie

And all physical media

I’ve got apps for everything. I’ve got Spotify for music. In recent years, I’ve been on the top .01% of listeners worldwide for Megadeth and The Cure. But on Saturday at the local church rummage sale (free day it turns out), I scored a Sony CDP-CX151. That’s a 100-CD carousel, and let me tell you, it is a wonder of technology even 22 years after it’s creation.

So, late Saturday, I set it up in the garage, plugged it in, wired it into my system that fills the garage and patio with song, and fought through the cob webs to load it with 100 CDs from the shed. That was great for hitting shuffle and playing “name that tune” with myself with the >1500 possible selections.

Sunday, I jotted down what was in each slot.

I want to create a genesis child theme. it should be mobile first and mobile friendly. Here’s its purpose: I have a Sony 100-CD changer …

It’s been less than 48 hours, and I now have this.

jukebox.webstpaul.com

I made a web app with the help of an AI agent that does just what I needed with an easy-to-update interface that reminds me of my old Zune (way better than any iPod).

If I was a true super genius, the web app would control the Sony via infrared and some Raspberry Pi contraption. I still need my remote or feet and fingers to do choose what to play. But I can browse what’s loaded and find which slot to choose to play.

Now that I’m done bragging about my web-development capabilities, the point of writing this was to acknowledge the distinct experience of digging through physical media that I own to decide what to load into the machine then what to listen to. Even my 300–500 CDS (never counted) are a narrow range of choices compared to my Spotify subscription. But I invested in them. I chose to bring them into my home between the early 90s and what, 2010? Now that they are out of the tote in the shed out back, they are “in my face,” reminding me how I’ve ignored many of them like Andy’s toys.

After I give these 100 some love, I’ve got to dig up the other parts of my CD collection I don’t exactly know the whereabouts of for the next iteration of my 100-disc jukebox.

Today’s treasure is this album that found it’s way into slot #1—good stuff from track 1 all the way through track 12. Not a single skip on this one.
